Mom Delivered 9 Pups!

On April 20th-April 21st, our dog Nala safely delivered nine puppies. This was her first litter, so we were expecting to be doggie doulas. To our surprise, Nala was a champ! She quietly delivered the first pup (Teddy), opened the sac, and cleaned him off without making a single sound.

It was bed time in the Bonds household, so it was extremely quiet. It was around 10:40pm on a Saturday night. My wife happened to be checking on Nala before she came to bed, and suddenly I heard her scream. I jumped up and my wife said, “OMG look babe! She had the first pup!” Nala was cleaning the pup, so we quickly took turns washing our hands and came right over to mom and and the new pup.

The birthing birthing period lasted from 10:40pm-4:30am the next morning. We were expecting a litter of 4-6 pups, but 9 was the total number of puppies. All of the puppies were delivered safely and they all survived!

Pad Training

The puppies responded very well to pad training. Initially they thought it was a chew toy, but after recognizing the urine and poop scent (purposefully placed there), they knew what it was for. Of course during play time they always try to "mark their territory", but we try to catch them beforehand and swiftly bring them to the pad.

The pups know the difference between their sleeping area versus the training pad, but of course if they get playful and are in need of their play time, they will indeed try to tear up the pad in typical puppy fashion.

Puppy Training & Play Time

The pups recently went outside for the first time. They ran, jumped around, and played the entire time. This was great exercise for them. They also enjoyed rolling around in the grass. It was adorable to watch. They are puppies so they always desire one-on-one play time. I have three children, so they always have playmates. They are great with children.

We don't train as of yet, but we do offer the occasional "no" if things get out of hand.

Grooming

What can I say...the pups love bath time! Perhaps it's the perfect temperature of the water, or maybe the smell of the soap, but bath time is loved amongst the pups.

In our experience with the parents, American Bullies don't shed much, and of course they pups are still small. Therefore, outside of bathing, trims aren't necessary.
